With tax season behind us, summer is a great time to start thinking about firm improvements—like adding valuable client services. Payroll is an exceptionally lucrative offering, and one that is highly untapped in the accounting profession. If you’ve not considered offering payroll in the past because you think it’s a big headache…take a moment to “re-think” things.

In the past, I shared the opinion of many accounting professionals: “Payroll is a hassle!” Today, I operate a separately branded payroll business, Payroll Vault, and serve more than 250 payroll clients. It has proven to be a highly profitable business, and one I plan to continue to grow.

Launching a full-service payroll offering doesn’t have to be difficult. You just need the right guidance on items such as developing an advanced client-centric website and establishing a pricing model. You will also need to devote some time to researching the proper technologies to support a paperless payroll process.
